According to Technorati, religion and spirituality are primary blog topics for 19% of bloggers. That’s one in every five blogs.
So what are those Godbloggers doing?
Christianity Today is an interesting case study. In the online Christian world, this site is the 800 pound gorilla. Christianity Today is such a megabrand in some circles people simply call it CT. In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that the organization I where I work has a partnership with CT, but that’s why I can vouch for their power and influence.
Whether you’re Christian or not, their social media history is worth examining.
Christianity Today eased into the blogosphere a few years ago with CT Live Blog. Then they expanded their role in the blogosphere with Out of Ur, which has become a destination blog for pastors. But CT continues to do its most interesting work in the blogosphere indirectly—by keeping bloggers informed through tools like CT News Feeds.
At first glance, the Christianity Today News Feeds page looks like Guy Kawasaki’s AllTop concept. Both sites divide content by themes, but here’s the difference. AllTop editors hand select feeds by themes like Christianity or Religion. In contrast, Christianity Today’s News Feed editors hand select individual articles. Naturally, the News Feed editors choose content based on what they expect will interest their demographic. And really that’s why it’s worth looking at.
Sometimes in the blogosphere, we can start to think that our blogs are about us. But they are always about our audience.
When bloggers (or News Feed editors or AllTop channel editors) meet their audience’s need for information, inspiration, and entertainment, they’ll earn their audience’s trust.
And credibility is still the most important currency any blogger has--whether you're a Godblogger or not.
